TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOUSE COOL

Not everyone is lucky enough to have central air, especially families living in older farmhouses. Our ancestors survived all summer without air conditioning, and so can we!

My house was built in 1890, and in order to have central air installed, we would have to have all the ductwork redone. We used window units for years in the living room and our bedroom, and last year, we bought a portable standing unit for our boys’ room. We couldn’t put a window unit in their room because their bunkbeds block one window, and we needed to keep one open in case of a fire. The portable unit has a vent hose that goes in the window, but the window can still be easily opened if need be. We were so happy with that unit that we’ve since replaced the window units in our bedroom and living room with portable models. So far, they have kept up with the heat better than the window units.
